Bartłomiej Gembicki’s research in the archives and libraries in Venice
From 4 to 19 June 2017 Bartłomiej Gembicki (PhD student from the Warsaw team) carried out a document search in Venice (Archivio di Stato, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Archivio Storico del Patriarcato and Biblioteca Gianni Milner Fondazione Ugo e Olga Levi). The search concerned mainly the liturgical sources from the church of St Mark, including five ceremonials produced between the sixteenth and the eighteenth centuries.
He also studied documents concerning the duties of the employees of St Mark’s church (particularly musicians and masters of ceremonies) and documented examples of their negligence.
Gembicki also listened to the sessions of the International Conference ‘Monteverdi’s Venetian Operas: New Ideas for Interpretation and Mise en Scène’ (16‒17 June 2017), organised by Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Teatro La Fenice. The conference was accompanied by the staging of all of Monteverdi’s extant operas under the direction of Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Gembicki participated in these events as his research interests also concern the contemporary reception of the works of Claudio Monteverdi.
